How does it work?
EllaOne works to prevent unwanted pregnancies, similar toLevonelle. However, it can provide protection up to 5 days (120 hours)after unprotected sex. The sooner it is taken within the 120 hour window, the more effective it will be. The active ingredient in ellaOne is ulipristal which can affect the progesterone hormone. This then works topostpone the ovaries from releasing an egg.
The effectiveness of the pill decreases over time:
- 95% effective within the first 24 hours
- 85% effective between 24-48 hours
- 58% effective between 48-72 hours
How is it taken?
EllaOne is taken as a single dose, as soon as possible after sexual intercourse and ensuring it is within a 120 hour window.
It should be taken whole, with water. Do not chew or crush this tablet.
If you vomit within three hours of taking the medication, you should take another tablet immediately.
Side effects of sumatriptan
Like all medicines, EllaOne can cause side effects. Not everybody will experience these side effects and if they do occur, they are usually mild to moderate in nature.
Common side effects of EllaOneinclude:
- Nausea
- Irregular bleeding
- Lower stomach pain
- Effect on next period (can be earlier or later than expected)
