What is generic Malarone tablets?

Generic Malarone tablets belong to a group of medicines called antimalarials. It contains two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride. It can be used to prevent or treat malaria. It is the generic version of Malarone and does not differ from the branded version except being cheaper.

How does generic Malarone work?

Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets prevent malaria by killing malaria parasite.

How is generic Malarone tablets used?

To check whether you need to take preventative malaria treatment for the countries you’re visiting, see the Fit for Travel website.

 Always take Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets exactly as your doctor has told you.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Take Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets with food or a milky drink, where possible. It is best to take Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets at the same time each day.

To prevent malaria in adults:  start taking Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets 1 to 2 days before travelling to an area which has malaria  continue taking it every day during your stay and then continue taking it for another 7 days after your return to a malaria-free area.

Take the full course of Atovaquone/Proguanil Hydrochloride 250 mg/100 mg tablets for maximum protection. Stopping early puts you at risk of getting malaria, as it takes 7 days to ensure that any parasites that may be in your blood following a bite from an infected mosquito are killed.

 What are the common side-effects of generic Malarone?

Like all medicines, generic Malarone can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Very common: affects more than 1 user in 10:

  • headache
  • feeling sick and being sick (nausea and vomiting)
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhoea

Common: affects 1 to 10 users in 100:

  • dizziness
  • sleeping problems (insomnia)
  • strange dreams
  • depression
  • loss of appetite
  • fever
  • rash
  • cough
  • allergic reactions
  • itching (pruritus)

Who can not use generic Malarone?

Do not take generic Malarone if:

  • are allergic (hypersensitive) atovaquone or proguanil or any of the other ingredients in the tablet (see section 6)
  • are pregnant
  • weigh less than 40kg
  • have severe kidney disease
  • have ever had epilepsy, convulsions or fits
  • suffer from depression
  • have tuberculosis
  • if you have galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption
