Description
How does it work?
Sumatriptanbelongs to a group of medicines called triptans. These work differently to regular pain relief medication as they work to reverse changes in the brain which are thought to cause migraines. This can also help to relieve the symptoms associated with migraines.
How is it taken?
Sumatriptan is usually taken as a single dose (50mg or 100mg) as needed for a migraine attack, as soon as you start to feel symptoms. If the first dose alleviates symptoms but they then return, it is safe to take another tablet at least 2 hours after the first dose. If the first table has no effect whatsoever, there is no need to take another dose and you should contact your GP. It should not be taken as a preventative against migraines symptoms.
The maximum dose is 300mg (6 tablets of 50mg or 3 tablets of 100mg) within a 24-hour period. If you find you are needing to take sumatriptan on more than 10 occasions per month, you should consult your GP or the Pingamed team.
